A thoughtful cotton finish for the side of the work you hold closest.
Choosing the lining is part of making a vestment feel finished. Cotton Sateen offers a smooth, closely woven cotton surface with a gentle, low-luster finish. It presses cleanly and gives stoles and more structured pieces a steady backing, without the shine of a polyester satin.
Projects and possibilities
Consider it for lining stoles, Roman-style chasubles and copes, or backing altar frontals, superfrontals and embroidered panels. It may also find a place in your quilting and general sewing when its medium-light weight and finish suit the project.
Fabric details
- Fiber content: 100% cotton
- Width: 54 inches (approximately 137 cm)
- Construction: Closely woven sateen
- Weight: Medium-light
- Finish: Smooth, low-luster surface
- Color options: Ivory, Red, Green, Blue, Violet, Black, Rose, Gold
Planning your project
For a stole, cotton sateen is useful when you want to reduce the slipping associated with smoother linings. Put a piece beside your face fabric and interfacing so you can feel the layers together. Please allow 2–3 weeks for fabric orders, and include enough yardage for any shrinkage during preparation.
Yardage and swatches
For your sewing project, choose By The Yard and your color. A quantity of 1 is 1 yard.
A swatch lets you see the color and feel the cloth before choosing your yardage. Select Swatch Sample and the color you would like to see. Each sample is approximately 4 × 6 inches; a quantity of 1 orders one sample, and a higher quantity orders additional samples. Add yardage separately when you are ready for the project.
Swatch order terms: Please choose your cut carefully. Once processed, swatches are final sale and cannot be cancelled, refunded or exchanged, including when a swatch was selected instead of yardage.
Before you cut and sew
Try laundering, colorfastness and pressing on a sample before cutting. Plan the finished piece’s care around all of its fabrics and trims. Cotton’s own care needs are only one part of that decision once everything is sewn together.
Questions about this fabric
Is cotton sateen the same as polyester satin?
They have a different feel. This sateen is 100% cotton, with a lower-luster surface than the polyester satin linings in our collection. A swatch will help you decide which finish you prefer against your chosen fabric.
Does this replace the interfacing in a stole?
The sateen finishes the inside as a lining or backing. Your pattern may still need a separate supporting layer, such as medium weight cotton canvas or Dowlas linen. Think of the lining and interfacing as two materials with two different jobs.
