Wavy Passing Thread for Goldwork Embroidery
Create texture, movement, and brilliant metallic detail with Wavy Passing Thread, a traditional thread used in goldwork embroidery, couching, ecclesiastical embroidery, ceremonial textiles, and decorative needlework.
Wavy Passing Thread features a distinctive undulating metallic surface that creates more visual texture than standard smooth passing thread. When couched onto the surface of the fabric, the subtle wave catches and reflects light from different angles, producing a rich, dimensional effect.
This specialty metallic thread is especially well suited for church embroidery, vestments, altar hangings, banners, monograms, borders, decorative motifs, lettering, and traditional goldwork designs.
Traditional Goldwork Thread
Wavy Passing is generally used as a surface thread rather than being repeatedly pulled through the fabric. The thread is laid in position and secured with fine couching stitches, helping preserve its metallic finish while allowing the distinctive wavy texture to remain visible.
It can be used alone for decorative lines and borders or combined with other goldwork materials such as Smooth Passing, Pearl Purl, Check Purl, and Bright Check for greater variation in texture and shine.
Because this thread contains genuine precious metal, pricing reflects the current precious metal market and may change as the market value of gold fluctuates.
Available Sizes
- Gilt #5 Wavy Passing Thread is approximately 0.5 mm across the width of the thread.
- Gilt #7 Wavy Passing Thread is approximately 0.8 mm across the width of the thread.
- Sold in 15-meter lengths.
Recommended Couching Thread
We recommend using Au Ver a Soie 100/3 for couching.
Colors 240 or 241 are a nice match with the gilt Wavy Passing Thread. You may also wish to use a contrasting thread color for couching to create an additional decorative effect.

A Distinctive Metallic Finish
