A firm foundation for the altar hanging you are making with care.
An altar frontal has more to carry than its face fabric. Embroidery, appliqué, braid and fringe all become part of the finished weight. Heavyweight Cotton Canvas offers a substantial woven foundation beneath those decorative layers, helping you work toward a flatter, more structured hang.
Projects and possibilities
Consider it as an interlining or base for altar frontals, superfrontals, pulpit falls and processional banners. It is also worth sampling for decorative wall hangings and other textile projects that need firm woven support.
Fabric details
- Fiber content: 100% cotton
- Width: 60 inches (approximately 152 cm)
- Weight: Heavyweight canvas
- Hand: Firm and supportive
- Use: Interlining, backing and structural foundation
Planning your project
Before cutting, put together a sample of the layers you intend to use. Include a little of the embroidery, fringe or heavier trim if you can, then see how the combination falls. If the result feels too substantial for your design, medium weight canvas offers a softer alternative.
Yardage and swatches
For your sewing project, choose By The Yard. A quantity of 1 is 1 yard.
A swatch lets you see the color and feel the cloth before choosing your yardage. Select Swatch Sample. Each sample is approximately 4 × 6 inches; a quantity of 1 orders one sample, and a higher quantity orders additional samples. Add yardage separately when you are ready for the project.
Swatch order terms: Please choose your cut carefully. Once processed, swatches are final sale and cannot be cancelled, refunded or exchanged, including when a swatch was selected instead of yardage.
Before you cut and sew
Test for shrinkage and prepare the canvas before cutting to the final measurements. Plan cleaning for the completed hanging with its decorative face fabric and trims in mind. It is easier to settle those details while the materials are still on the worktable.
Questions about this fabric
Can I use this inside a stole?
It may suit a stole that needs a firm finish, but the full construction can become quite substantial. If you prefer a softer hand, compare medium weight cotton canvas before choosing. Try the face fabric, canvas and lining together.
Is this the visible fabric for an altar frontal?
It is generally the supporting layer beneath the decorative fabric. Your pattern and design determine whether any canvas is left visible, but its usual job is to help the cloth above it hang well.
